Service No Longer Required
The film has been made mainly by veterans whose lives had fallen apart.
Many of them started acting in a drama rehabilitation project attached to Combat Stress. Those same veterans are now at the vanguard of demonstrating the character and capability of overcomers on uncompromising public platforms.
We operate on a shoestring but our priority is always to pay our veterans professional rates. We are indebted to many friends of HOfB for the generous pro bono work that keeps us going.
Thanks to a donation from the Veterans’ Foundation, we have been able to make a moving and thought provoking film.
SNLR deserves the widest publicity for reasons which include:
Nobody should have to live on the streets. However difficult it may be, rough-sleepers should be offered the chance to re-build their lives in a supportive community.
Making SNLR has given those involved a significant morale-boost. For some, the most important thing has been the opportunity to learn. For others, it has been a change from a lonely existence to working again in a team on a meaningful project. For a few, it has helped to confirm that their struggle – financial, mental health, loss of confidence or whatever else it may be – has been worth it.
Anyone embarking on an acting career needs to find work which pays their bills, not just develops them as artists.
At the end of the film, there is a request for financial help. This would enable us to employ more veterans who have gone through the pain and desperation that is part of rehabilitation. It would also enable us to be more ambitious in bringing the grim reality of homelessness to the public’s attention, as well as encouraging them to get involved and see what they can do.
Below are some comments that followed our Autumn 2019 read-through of The Terminus, from which SNLR’s screenplay is adapted:
